Christos Danakas as a Guest on the “Voices of Change” Podcast
Guest appearance on the podcast “Voices of Change”
Christos Danakas, pianist and composer, was recently featured as a guest on the podcast “Voices of Change”, hosted by Giorgos Louridas. In the episode, Christos spoke about his life and artistic activity in Germany, reflecting on long-term living abroad and the conditions that shape a sustainable artistic career.
Having lived in Germany for nearly thirteen years, with the past five based in Stuttgart, Danakas described the country as a place that has gradually become home. While everyday life in a big city requires constant organization and effort, he emphasized the sense of stability that allows artists to plan their professional lives with continuity and perspective.
During the conversation, Christos addressed the question of return and his ongoing connection with his hometown of Kalamata. While maintaining strong emotional ties to Greece, he noted that a permanent return remains unlikely under current circumstances, primarily due to professional realities. As he explained, the ability to work consistently as a musician is a decisive factor in shaping long-term life choices.
The discussion also focused on key milestones in his musical journey abroad, including his admission to university through a highly competitive entrance examination and his graduation with special distinction. Of particular importance to him is the opportunity to present his own compositions in concerts across different German cities and regions, an experience he described as central to his artistic identity and to the dialogue created between composer and audience.
Christos identified his decision to leave Greece as one of the most difficult choices of his life. Moving abroad without prior experience outside the country, he approached the transition as a personal journey, aiming first to grow as an individual and then as a musician. Despite the challenges, he described the experience as formative on all levels.
A significant part of the conversation was devoted to the differences between Germany and Greece in terms of artistic infrastructure. Christos pointed to Germany’s long-standing tradition of institutional and state support for music, which provides consistency, professional prospects, and long-term planning. In contrast, he noted that artistic life in Greece often relies heavily on individual effort, resulting in uncertainty and limited sustainability despite the country’s strong creative potential.
According to Christos, the core issue in Greece’s cultural sector is the absence of a stable, long-term framework that supports artists professionally and socially. He emphasized the importance of respect for the professional artist, both in working conditions and economic terms, warning that without structural support, significant talent risks remaining underdeveloped or lost.
Addressing younger artists, Christos encouraged emerging artists to trust themselves and not be afraid of uncertainty. Whether moving from the provinces to major cities or seeking opportunities abroad, he stressed the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone and viewing place not as a limitation, but as a starting point for growth.
Finally, he proposed a stronger connection between music and education in Greece, highlighting the German model where music is treated as a fundamental part of general education rather than a luxury. Such an approach would help cultivate audiences, brings respect for professional artists, and reinforces the role of music as an essential element of culture.
